Differential Diagnosis

This patient suffered a sudden patchy hair loss on the scalp of 10 days duration. He gave history of severe psychological upset few days before the onset. Family history of similar problem was negative. On examination, two localized patches of hair loss are seen. The skin in bald patches was normal (not scarred) but red due to irritation by garlic rubbed in the area by the patient as a treatment modality for alopecia areata. It is worthy to notice that some white or grey hairs in the upper patch resisted fall by alopecia areata.
