Differential Diagnosis

History: In winter on white skin Tinea or Pityriasis versicolor appears as red finely scaly areas on a white background but in summer when white skin is tanned the condition appears as white scaly areas against the background of tanned skin. Scraping the skin with a blade will reveal the fine scale. The condition is due to a yeast fungus growing on the skin. This interferes with the normal pigmenting process on sun exposure.
