Tinea and topical steroids!!!

Tinea circinata whatever the site involved is commonly misdiagnosed as other inflammatory dermatoses like eczema or psoriasis. Topical corticosteroids usually are prescribed based on misdiagnosis causing some initial improvement due to their anti-inflammatory effect but later on exacerbate the condition and may result in widespread infection or tinea incognito. This is a common scenario encountered in clinical dermatologic practice, therefore diagnosis of tinea needs careful examination and high suspicion index of diagnosis to avoid faulty diagnosis. This man suffered this scenario as wrongly diagnosed as eczema by 2 different general practitioners. On examination, active border was evident at the periphery of the lesions of tinea manuum and KOH mount smear was positive for fungi.
