Differential Diagnosis

History: Atypical fibroxanthoma is not a distinctive tumour clinically. It typically occurs on the scalp or forehead of elderly males who have had chronic sun exposure. The tumour arises in the dermis and is composed of bizarre spindle cells and atypical histiocytes. It tends to recur locally if not widely excised but it rarely metastasizes. It is thought by some to be a superficial variant of malignant fibrous histiocytoma.
