Description: Pediculus humanus capitis, is an obligate ectoparasite that commonly affects school going children. It is 2–3 mm in length and has a flattened, elongated, greyish body that becomes reddish after feeding human blood.

Differential Diagnosis

History:

This 10 year old girl got a heavy infestation with head lice for over six months. No improvement was seen with different topical treatments with permthrin and malathione and physical measures like head shaving.  A colony of lice can be seen on the scalp in this image. She was successfully treated with oral ivermectin.
